Basic Tools for Leadership is designed to identify resources that are useful for curriculum leadership. County offices of education will probably include all resources listed, while school library media staff will select those most appropriate and provide information to clients about where to access others.

We hope that your copy of Basic Tools, personally revised and annotated, will help you to do an outstanding job of providing and fostering curriculum leadership.
Section III emphasizes organizations important for school library leaders and the educators with whom they work, and is arranged alphabetically by organization name, with a web address and a phone number. A brief introduction to the organization and selected resources are noted.
Section IV is organized by curricular categories and features reference journals, online resources and books often published by professional organizations:
AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF SCHOOL LIBRARIANS (AASL)

The American Association of School Librarians, a division of the American Library Association, has as its mission to advocate excellence, facilitate change and develop leaders in the school library media field. In addition to two journals and other publications, the organization has published new standards Information Power: Building Partnerships for Learning (1999), a workbook planning guide, and a program assessment rubric. (Online excerpt includes The Nine Information Literacy Standards for Student Learning.) Other notable resources to support school library media staff:
AASL Position Statements, aligned with Information Power, are useful tools to develop school library policies.

The California Department of Education publishes the basic documents that guide public education in California. Typically these are essential resources for administrators, teachers, and parents. In addition to recommended readings, links to educational resources, program quality criteria, academic standards, and guidelines for facilities, the site includes:

all levels should provide access to this information. Relevant publications should be
included in school, district, and county office library collections.

CALIFORNIA SCHOOL LIBRARY ASSOCIATION

The California School Library Association publishes and sponsors books and other materials usually developed its committees to provide guidance and leadership to members. Some items are distributed as part of membership, some are available upon request, some are commercially published, and some are available on the CSLA Web site. All library media staff in California should have copies of or access to these resources and should use them to provide relevant leadership.

The Library of California is planning an electronic network of California libraries that will support statewide information databases, telecommunications infrastructure, interlibrary and direct loan programs and regional library network development.
CORPORATION FOR EDUCATION NETWORK INITIATIVES IN CALIFORNIA (CENIC)

The Educational Resources Information Center provides educators with educational research, information on practices in teaching and learning, and data for educational decision-making. Each of the 18 clearinghouses focuses on a different discipline, theme or aspect of education.

ERIC IT specializes in educational technology and library and information services:
ERIC Clearinghouse on Assessment and Evaluation provides comprehensive and balanced information concerning educational assessment including a full-text Asssessment Library.
ERIC Clearinghouse on Disabilities and Gifted Education gathers and disseminates the professional literature, information, and resources on the education and development of individuals of all ages who have disabilities and/or who are gifted.
LIBRARY
RESEARCH SERVICE (LRS)

Library Research Service generates research and statistics to inform decision-making in library and information management. Their series of studies (Alaska, Colorado, Pennsylvania) has established a relationship between academic achievement and strong school library programs.

It is essential that library media staff know about the professional associations of various disciplines and the key resources in fields related to education, learning theory and specific curriculum areas.
