Scheduled downtime on Wednesday, 8/4/10

We expect to have a period of downtime tomorrow, Wednesday, August 4th, in order to make some hardware changes. Since some of the changes involve assistance from a Dell technician, we do not currently have the exact time window for the downtime. We will add comments to this post tomorrow as we get more information about the timing. Our hope is that it will be in the late afternoon, but it may depend on the technician’s availability.

8/4/10, 8:00 AM – Some maintenance has already started, and the site may be unavailable at times throughout today. We apologize for the inconvenience today — unfortunately this wasn’t something that could wait for the weekend. If you are unable to access the site, please try again in an hour.

This week’s NoodleBib updates are complete. Please report any issues through the Helpdesk. We will be continuing our discussion of the new features on the blog this weekend, as well as providing some details about additional updates coming in the next few weeks.

We will be working to update the user’s guide and online tutorials over the next several weeks as well, so be aware that the new features are not yet covered in those resources.

Scheduled downtime: Friday, 7/23/10

There will be some downtime the evening of Friday, July 23rd, from approximately 9:00-11:00 PM PST. During this time we will be doing the first of several NoodleBib updates planned this summer. We will be revealing details about the improvements and new features on the blog this week, so stay tuned!

Information about downtime this afternoon

At 3:00 PM PST today, the NoodleTools.com site went offline. It turns out the cause was a failed switch (a hardware component) at the company that houses our servers. The Web site appears to be back online now (4:30 PM PST). We apologize for the inconvenience, and hopefully they have the issue fixed permanently.

Server upgrade 11/6 – 11/7

We will be upgrading our primary and replication/backup servers in three weeks, starting the evening of Friday, November 6th. While the upgrade will be complete Friday night, we will likely keep the server offline for testing the morning of Saturday, November 7th. Please plan accordingly!

Update: The server will be taken offline at approximately 6 PM PST on Friday evening. Our goal is to complete testing on Friday night and be back online by midnight, but if there are any issues, we may keep the server offline on Saturday morning. Please check http://www.noodletools.info/ for updates.

Update (8:00 PM PST): The upgrades are complete. Everything went smoothly and quite a bit faster than expected. Tests looked great, so we’ve put the server back online. Enjoy!

We will be taking the site offline for some server upgrades on Saturday, October 3rd at approximately 10:00 PM CST. The site should be available by 11:00 PM.

Schedule for 7/31 – 8/1 update

Here is the final update schedule for our upcoming release, which includes MLA 7th edition formatting, a rework of the notecards feature, Chicago/Turabian legal citations, and additional features and bugfixes:

We will take the server offline Friday evening at approximately 9:00 PM PST.
Since this is a big update and will require thorough testing on the primary servers, we will keep the site offline on Saturday, August 1st (exact time TBD, but you can just assume it will be unavailable for most of Saturday).
The site will be available on Sunday, August 2nd.

Note that APA 6th edition changes will not be part of this 8/1 release. However, we are in the process of reviewing the changes in the new edition of the APA Publication Manual, and will post again on the blog soon, once we have a timeline for those changes.

Site offline this morning

NoodleTools was down for about an hour this morning. We’re investigating the cause, but it is running smoothly now and the problem seems to have been an isolated incident. We received a mind-boggling number of e-mails and voicemails reporting the issue =) Since this happened before work hours, we couldn’t update the NoodleTools.info site to explain the situation, so apologies for any inconvenience this caused.
